Fortify Your Computer For FREE
We all know that it is a dangerous world out there. Your computer has so many hazards to contend with. There are computer viruses, spyware, malware, trojans and hacking… and probably a host of other ways by which its security can be compromised.
It is no wonder then, that the computer security software industry is worth several billion dollars and counting. Obviously, these software are vital to run a computer or a network with minimal worries. So they come with very high price tags. Now, big-money enterprises can afford those… but what about poor PC owners like you and me?
Well, if you don’t already know, here’s a list of software that will give your computer enterprise level security for FREE.
1. Anti Virus
Move over Norton and Mcafee… the freebies are here with some power-packed punches. The two free anti virus software on our radar are:
AVG and AVAST Home Edition. Both these software have two things in common—they are both prize winners, and of course they are free. With these two, you can get as good protection from virus as some of the more expensive software will offer.
You can download these software from their respective websites and give them a go. We promise you will not be disappointed. Download links are given at the end of this article.
2. Firewall
A firewall is an essential weapon in everyone’s computer security arsenal. It acts as the shield between outside intruders and your computer, while letting in the safer packets of data. You will be surprised, but you can get enterprise level firewall security for free as well. The top two such firewalls on our list are:
Comodo Firewall Pro and Zone Alarm Free Edition. Comodo offers you enterprise level security for free. The host of features that are available to you at absolutely no cost are simply amazing. However, if you are new at configuring firewalls for your computer, we suggest you go for Zone Alarm… simply because it is more easily configurable.
Zone Alarm will not offer you as many great features as Comodo does (you have to pay to get those), but what it does offer should be good enough for a PC owner. The security features are robust, and configuring the program is a breeze.
3. Malware And Trojans
Malware and Trojans are tricky things to capture and banish, simply because they are programmed to be invisible. In recent times, there has been some software manufacturers who have offered anti-malware software for free. We examined two of these:
A Squared Free and Comodo BO Cleaner. A squared free is the more popular of the two. It has been around for a while and provides adequate security against Malware and Trojans. The one con of the free version is that it does not offer live monitoring, but the scan feature is powerful and can sniff out hazards if you remember to run it regularly.
BO Cleaner is a geeky software, once again, from the house of Comodo. If you are new at handling software for your computer by yourself, then you might find its interface difficult to fathom. But behind all the cryptic buttons is a powerful little tool that gives you round the clock protection. Unlike A squared, it provides live monitoring. There is no manual scan facility that we know of.
4. Anti Spyware
In this category, the best tools come for free. You can try either Lavasoft Adaware or Spybot Search & Destroy . Neither of these tools offer a live monitoring facility in the free version, although Adaware does have a paid version with even more features. Spybot S&D is all free and all powerful. It is difficult to choose between the two. You can opt for any one and be assured about your computer’s safety from Spyware.
