Folder Lock 5.8.2: Snazzy and Useful
Isn’t it annoying when you have to share a computer with someone. You never know what the other person is doing. Is he/she reading your emails, or going through your documents? What if you have some of your secret files, videos, porn, letters, stored in your computer? Is there a guarantee that the other users will now invade your privacy?
We found a software that would allay your fears once and for all. It is very aptly named Folder Lock. The version we tested was number 5.8.2.
We downloaded the trial version and loaded it on our computer. With the trial version, you get 35 free uses (note: not 35 days, but 35 times of running the program). When you launch the program for the first time, you get a nag screen reminding you about the 35 free usages thing. The screen stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the program launches.
The first thing you will notice about Folder Lock is its snazzy interface (see below). Immediately after launching the program, it prompts you to set a password for the “locker”. As you set the password, you will see a “password strength” indicator, similar to the one in Hotmail or other email programs, below the entry field. Mind it, at that point of time it is not clear what the locker is.
So, after you set the password, you are required to click on a button labeled “Lock”. Once you click, you see the key turning, and the program switches off. Go ahead and run it again. It will prompt you for the password.

Enter the password and click OK. The lock turns and the “locker” opens. It is then that you get to know what the locker is. It is secure sub-folder within the “Folder Lock” program folder. You can store all your private files, communication, photographs here, and no one can access them without sabotaging your password.
Of course, as soon as the locker opens, you get a fancy looking note that you can also lock other files, folders, USB drives etc using folder lock, and no one can access them without a valid password. The program however recommends you to make the best use of the “locker”.

The Folder Lock icon remains minimized on your computer’s system tray. You can click it to open the interface once more. So when you are done saving your files in a secure locker, call for the interface once more. This is how it will appear.

Click on “Lock” to put your secret under lock and key, and for a good night’s sleep with your mind away from all the snooping that someone can do on you.
Folder Lock can be downloaded and tried for free from here.
The current price of the software is $35.
Patrol My PC speak: Good, solid, secure and value for money. Definitely worth giving a try.
